Review
2005-09-26 - ONE submitted by pegger4lifeI travelled over 8 hours one way from Canada for this show and let me tell you, it was worth it! I didn't have the greatest seats, upper deck, behind stage left (Adam's side). However, once the lights went down, it didn't matter where you were in the arena. Everyone was standing, clapping and singing along. Young and old. New fans, the die-hards from day one and the band, all became one person for those 2 hours.
Thanks to websites like this, I had a pretty good idea of what the set list was going to be like and anticipated standout moments. Declaration of Human Rights followed by Pride-Streets-One. Opening with Blinding Lights and ending with 40. There were a few songs I would have liked to hear like New Year's Day and I Will Follow, but don't get me wrong, they played brilliantly.
I'd like to point out that Vertigo was not intended to be the final song. After Yahweh, Adam took the guitar and Edge the bass as usual when finishing with 40 on this tour. However, just as they were about to start, Bono quickly ran over to Adam, said something and did the same with Edge. They exchanged instruments and played Vertigo instead. Excellent decision on their part.
While 40 would have been excellent to end the show on with the crowd singing along, it would have almost been a downer. By playing Vertigo one more time, they quickly brought the crowd back to near ecstacy and left on the highest of high notes.
This was my first U2 concert and hopefully not the last. There were times throughout the show that I would stop singing and just listen to the crowd. It was amazing, an almost religious-like experience. I just about shed a tear when the crowd, including myself, loudly and proudly finished "I Still Haven't Found" instead of the band.
If was to rate this show on a scale from 1 to 10, I'd give it 778256124. Even if you are not a U2 fan, you can appreciate the heart and soul those 4 men and their tireless crew pour out each night. My friend, who was dead set against Bono's "ONE" campaign and trash-talked his politic views all day, succomed to the moment and was overpowered by the magnitude of the event he was watching. He texted his name to the number they put on the screen with pride.
Bono, The Edge, Larry and Adam sold me on Friday night. They were one. The crowd was one. We were one. back
