Review
2005-09-18 - Bono Knows How to Put on a Show submitted by Don WaiIt was a great concert with a little over 2 hours of music. City of Blinding Lights was an excellent song to start with. The stage effects were brilliant, especially the vertigo style stage and lighting. Bono's tribute to his dad on Sometimes You Can... was his strongest vocal performance. However, during other songs, his age showed when holding notes and by toning down the tempo of songs like Beautiful Day. Bono's optimistic story of Edge coming from the future was inspirational as opposed to preachy. Funniest moment was when Bono offered to tell jokes as Edge had guitar problems. Eddie Vedder appearing was a highlight though he didn't really belt out any significant amount of lyrics. Bono's disjointed gait at the start of Discotheque and the performance itself was a lot of fun. Other Canadian highlights included dedicating a song to the Hospital for Sick Kids and its nurses (because "everyone loves nurses"), mentioning the Maple Leaf in a song and giving out Paul Martin's phone number. The encore was ok, but perhaps more upbeat and recognizable songs (New Year's Day?) could have been used. In the concert t-shirt area, the most popular shirt appeared to be the dark green/grey "Dismantle" bomb shirt with the '05 Vertigo on the back. All XXL and XL shirts were sold out. All in all, what U2 does best is perform a rocking, entertaining show with a little bit of social conscience added on top and last night, they certainly delivered. back
