Review
2005-08-04 - I was the fifth member of U2 submitted by Magnus StĺlbergThe rain had been knocking on the door all day in Gothenburg but the town would not let the rain in. When the band showed up behind the seen, and the intro music started pumping through the speakers, the Ullevi stadium exploded in white, an idea from the fansite u2.se.
After an electric triplet ("Vertigo", "I will follow" and "The electric Co") it was time for me and the other 58.000 people to become the fifth member of U2. It was a massive choir that joined the band in Elevation. A truly memorable moment.
I'm no fan of "New year's day" but it was performed with great skill and Bono's voice was at its peak this evening. It was lightyears better, clearer and stronger than four years ago when a saw one of the concerts in Stockholm.
"Beautiful day" took the show to its next peak and in "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" I found myself singing louder than ever before. At the end of the song everybody sang the chorus over, and over again. I guess the song would have lasted all night if The Edge had not begun "All I want is you".
Up until this the show had been magic but even though the lights in "City of blinding lights" where truly blinding and fantastic, the song itself never really got off. I got the same feeling with "Miracle drug", one of my favourite songs from "HTDAAB".
Bono dedicated "Sometimes you can't make it on your on" to his father and it is an amazing song.
"Love and peace or else" is not a personal favourite and it gave me time to look around at all the people.
"Sunday bloody Sunday" got people on their feet again. It is a great song but I guess I have heard it one or two times too many to really appriciate it again ...
The roller-coaster ride continued with "Bullet the blue sky" another of my non favourite U2-songs. I guess the guys really like this one.
A moment I will never forget was Bono's marveolus voice in "Miss Sarajevo". He turned the song into a prayer and replaced the Pavarotti part with a performance that made me cry. Thanks, Bono!
"Pride" made Ullevi rock again and it made the way for the greatest song of all times - "Where the streets have no name".
That intro made me cry (it always does, by the way) in Stockholm four years ago and my eyes turned wet this time as well. You all know what I mean. When the song ended I turned to my friend and said: "Well, now the rain can fall". About one minute later the rain started to fall - massive!
A rainy version of "One" was a great ending to the main part of the show. The encore was another roller-coaster ride and I really don't understand the songs the band picked for this sett. "Zoo station" and "The fly" are okey songs, but to me there are far better choices to make.
Anyway "With or without you", "All because of you" and "Party girl" (great choice boys!) gave some magic moments again and when Bono made the Vertigo-count in Swedish, for a second performance of "Vertigo", we all where in trance - even though a heavy rain fell over Ullevi and the stage.
To sum it all up: This night belonged to U2 and its fifth member - the audience. Together we made this concert magic, and being a part of the U2-choir is a memory for life. back
