Review

2005-07-04 - Live 8's Beautiful Day submitted by Matthew Atkin

Wow.

I'm sure every U2 fan knew about Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band being done at the beginning, and I'd heard rumours about Beautiful Day following. Only One had been confirmed, and I had a feeling they would do Vertigo.

Still, I'd had an idea that they would play Streets, and that they were saving Crumbs for a debut today. But how can you be disappointed with such an incredible setlist?

Every song was done perfectly. The band seemed to lack a little energy, but no doubt they are saving most of their energy for the concert tonight in Vienna.

Beautiful Day is a highlight of the bands career, and this was one of the best performances of it ever - it beats the Slane version, it beats the Superbowl performance. The doves being released was inspiring.

Vertigo was the best version they've ever done. It was the first time I've seen the background for that song in concert, and I thought it was just amazing.

One was truly a powerful version. Reverting back to how it was played earlier in the career instead of the way they've done it during the Vertigo Tour was outstanding. The names of those who signed the Live 8 petition scrolled along the screen, and the flags normally seen during Streets scrolled up and down the screen until they formed the poignant word: ONE.

I will never forget this experience. It was even better then their original Live Aid set of Sunday Bloody Sunday and Bad. Maybe its the technology available to do this concert now, or maybe its just that the band are more closely tied to Africa then ever before, and so played with more passion.

Whatever it was, the band were inspiring, and it almost reduced me to tears.

As Bono himself said, "God speed your love to - Africa."
