Review

2005-06-30 - INTO THE VALLEY submitted by leonois irvine

Great exitment built up along the seats. Killers (support act) were great. Didn't catch much of Starsailor but the singer's voice sounded great.

U2 came on around 8.30pm and the first 5 songs just ripped through the Stadium with precision and Bono's voice sounded great. Unfortunately the Stadium sound seemed a little echoy but the pace and passion from those opening numbers just swept everyone off their feet. The crowd were magnificent in dueting to Elevation.

Then, well a little disappointment really. The full set list just didn't seem to carry the momentum. I thought there were too many ballady type numbers (Still Haven't Found followed by All I Want Is You just broke the initial spell a little too much. Followed by City of Blinding Lights (Bono fucked up the opening lines), Miracle Drug and Sometimes just killed the tempo dead. Shame really the crowd seemed to lose a little interest for a while and even began to just talk amongst themselves, which was annoying when Bono was addressing the audience.
Love and Peace, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Bullet were great but the crowd just didn't seem to recover their initial breathlessness.

Oncores seemed rushed and a little incoherent, Zoo Station and The Fly should have been monumentous, they weren't and Bono's voice seemed to go off towards the end. Rousing Vertigo to finish off brought the crown to it's greatest height but that was at the very end.

Finally, I though the choreography was too contrived. For some songs it was as if some of the band members had to stand here or go there. Elevation tour seemed more 'rock n roll', this time some members (Adam) seemed to be a little bemused by standing on the 'outstage' completely on his own. On the whole it just didn't really 'leave the ground enough to stay airborn'.

Pleased I was there but a little disappointed to be honest.
