Review

2005-06-29 - Does it get any better than this? submitted by Conor Murray

Wow, that was amazing. U2 playing in Croke Park, in their home city to 90,000 people (I think it was more than 80,000 anyway, I heard a lot of stories of people paying stewards and sneaking in).

Vertigo was always classed as a decent song in my book, an anthem that everyone knew, but it was nothing special. But it sure got the crowd going. If there was anyone in the crowd that didn't know the lyrics of the chorus they were truly strange strange people!

Bono was on top form as a performer and as a singer. The rest of the band members didn't really seem to be affected by the crazed crowd, but Bono seemed to be really enjoying himself. Whatever it is about U2, they seem to make massive stadiums feel smaller. I certainly felt a lot closer than I was.

They played all their classics, apart from Bad, and mixed the old with the new excellently. It was brilliant when Bono sang every part of I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking for apart from that very line, which the entire crowd sang. Powerful stuff.

Bono didn't overdo the whole world peace and human rights thing either. I thought it was done just right, and that woman reading out the human rights amendment was a nice touch.

Favourite part of the gig? Holding up my phone for One. It was very emotional, and the entire crowd was swaying to the music. Running To Stand Still was also brilliant, because you could really hear Bono because not many in the crowd knew the words. It was brilliant.

Overall, I've gotta say that 82.50 was cheap. I would pay 1000 euro and walk from Australia to see another gig like Monday night. But the truth is, I doubt I'll ever see a concert of it's like again. Every concert I ever go to will be a disappointment after Monday night.

10/10
