Review

2005-06-27 - Sat. 25th june 2005 - Big visuals, Big Sound, Big Band. submitted by Jason ONeill

We got there early, arrived at the stadium around 15:45, got in without a hitch, no searches for our upper tier seats in section 716 - facing the stage

[HINT: if you are going to Monday 27th and are in an upper tier seat, arrive early and make sure you TAKE YOUR CAMERA!]

We decided not to take a camera because we feared it might be confiscated. Unfounded.

Had plenty of time for drinks outside the section entrance with plenty of space there in the well planned stadium. Around 18:00-18:15, the Thrills are on and they're OK (I'm no fan personally) they generate a festival feel inside the stadium and remind people still buying drinks outside that the reason they are there is fast approaching and there's NOT LONG TO GO!!.

19:15 ish and Paddy Casey is on. What a great sound he has and gets a warm welcome and although I've never heard of him or his stuff the music is catchy, powerfull and sounds excellent. Better than the Thrills. Amazingly the stadium is still yet to fill up.

There's a 20-30 min break and then ay 9 p.m the crowd start making noises and going mad - U2 have got up to the stage and stand together in line and bow before assuming positions and setting the stadium alight with the Vertigo intro.

From here on for the next 4 tracks you can really hear and see them soaking up the energy of the shouting and singing crowd. They are going for it.

First 7 or 8 tracks are a blur of adrenaline and noise until there's a respite point as the slow intro to City of Blinding Lights strikes up and the huge light screen comes to life for the first time, coinciding with dusk.

Miracle Drug is next, dedicated to those working in the medical profession, the screen turns into a giant heart rate oscillascope for this intro.
Straight into Sometimes you can't make it on your own where Bono is down on the right-hand circular mini-platform into the crowd and the others have hung back into obscurity cornfirming this song is his to deliver with the expected passion and vocal power - which he does admirably.

Beautiful moment finishing Love and Peace Or Else where Bono, donning 'Coexist' headscarf takes over from Larry to complete the solo drum beat on the ministage into the crowd, contnuing to do so as the band move on to the intro of Sunday Bloody Sunday and giving a defiant final beat leaving the drumsticks to depart from his hands after their final contact with the drum.

Usual strong imagery with Bullet the blue sky with the headscarf turning into a blindfold and Bono symbolising the doomed PoW.

Interesting moment for the finish of Running to stand still ending in the scrolling of the declaration of human rights up the giant lightwall.

Nothing need be said about Pride and Where the Streets have no name . . .

My personal favourite of the evening, the re-appearance for the encore and giant lightwall provides those familiar symbols from Zooropa, and the superb sound of anticipation which is the background buzz and release of smoke to introduce the opening riff and drum beats of Zoo Station.

The Fly, although I would have preferred it as it was performed back in those 1992 performances, sounds great and they've changed and modernised some of the imagery which flashes up with that. - I wonder whether that light wall is actually capable of flashing stuff up / changing imagery as quickly as the vidiwalls used in those 1992 gigs - maybe that's just me spending the last ten years wishing I'd got to see one of the ZooTV concerts. I might be a tad biased in this regard.

Party Girl and some lucky crowd member gets called up onto one of the walkways after being noticed spending the whole concert holding up an orange sign (never got to see what it said) -after asking a couple of times he gets taken back to the stage and is actually allowed to perform this track with them on stage playing rhythm on acoustic guitar. Lucky boy indeed. All the crowd knew was that he was a Canadian chap called Matt.

Great audience reaction and scribble effect imagery for yahweh on the light wall, this is performed more acoustic slow style than on the album and it goes down beatifully.

Gig finishes on Vertigo this time with full light accompaniment and the crowd going for it.

What a great show. Something for everyone. 9/10.

P.S. Dublin is also a great City to visit. Go there regardless.
