Review

2005-05-26 - Let's end the Urban Legend submitted by Youngblood 85

This show took place a week after I graduated from high school. It was a defining moment for my tastes in music. I was vaguely familiar with the band, as "New Years Day" was big on MTV and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" was starting to get airtime on the radio. One of my friends was a big fan of the band and he talked me and another of our friends into going to the show. I have to admit that I went for the social aspect and the possibility of meeting some girls.

The Alarm opened and played a phenomenal set. They were called out for a second encore and told us that they had played all of their songs, but if we didn't mind, they would play "Marching On" one more time. We approved and they blazed through the song.

Then it was time for U2. They opened with a scorching "Gloria". Bono captivated the crowd. He waved the white flag during "Sunday Bloody Sunday", marched, and climbed the scaffolding. I don't remember any pauses in the show and I certainly don't remember any booing. The small hall off the old Salt Palace was alive with kids dancing and enjoying what we would soon see become the best band in the world. I entered that hall vaguely familiar with the band but walked out a sweating, blown away U2 fan. The booing did not happen. Plain and simple. They actually played a couple of encores.
