Review

2005-05-10 - Alright, but not stellar submitted by walter

Saw the show last night... I am 36, been going to U2 shows since I as about 15 years old; I have probably seen them a dozen times in concert, and I would have to say this show ranked somewhere in the middle of all the shows I have seen. Nowhere near as good as the 1984 show at the Aragon, but not as sucky as the Fall 1987 show at the Horizon. They played the songs well, and I am sure they thought they did too, but the sound was somewhat muddled, surely a fault of the United Center venue. The new songs sounded good, and the inclusion of "Electric Co." was wonderful for us old-timers. However, the passion that I remember from previous shows was seriously lacking. And I missed the "acoustic" set they have done on other recent tours. There was also a dynamic missing from the band... Bono was too much of a "frontman", and the rest of the guys delegating to supporting roles. Some of the songs I would have liked to see included in the set were "Bad" and "Stuck in a Moment", but again, from such a tremendous catalog of music it is hard to pick and choose, and you can't satisfy everyone all the time. It was nice this tour though to see them returning to "40" for the closing number. All in all, a good show. Not great, but good. And a good U2 show is better than most bands' GREAT shows.
