2009-08-16 - Simply MAGNIFICENT! submitted by Debbie Wilson

It's been such a long time coming but this transplanted Tennessean was so happy to be in this company Friday night. I was sorry to miss The Hours, but ELBOW beautifully lifted the lid on what was to be a magical night. No online footage can match the spectacle of being there. The stage itself is a wonder to behold and takes on a life of its own through the night. I'm sure it was breathing as the guys launched into BREATHE and set us off on our adventure. MAGNIFICENT brought tears to my eyes early on; singing it, is for me, an act of worship. On we went, through old favourites and new favourites, not a dud in the bunch. As they cranked up SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY the emotion swelled with the raised voices. This, I felt, was our "Chorzow moment"- reminding us just how far we've come in the lifetime of this song. Steaming straight after into PRIDE, IN THE NAME OF LOVE made the point complete. The poignant tribute to Aung San Suu Kyi and Bishop Tutu's message focused us on how far we've yet to go. WITH OR WITHOUT YOU had 90,000 voices signing as one. Stunning! Throughout Bono held us in the palm of his hand and seemed to be everywhere. The Edge made his guitars sing as he prowled round the full circle. Adam added the fullness and even Larry escaped the confines of his kit to go walk-about with a strap-on big bongo. Truly an unforgetable experience.
