Review

2009-08-16 - A Summer Night at Wembley submitted by Edi

It was a warm summer evening which started with a good set from The Hours which was well received. They engaged well with the audience who were starting to fill up the pitch at that point. Glasvegas for us came across less well, failing to connect with very little chat to the crowd and what might be described as a detached rock star chic swagger. Basically, respect has to be earned and that means hard work and communication. Hope they go down better in Glasgow which I am sure they will ! The main event was stunning, our second gig of the tour after Paris I. Excellent set list with particular highlights for us being Stay, Bad, Until The End of the World, Unforgettable Fire, Ultraviolet apart from the usual big hitters, Streets, Haven’t Found, SBS, Walk On. Pride and New Year's Day were immense. Meanwhile within the new stuff we are watching new classics being born : Unknown Caller was stunning, excellent soaring solo from The Edge. No Line, Crazy Tonight, Moment of Surrender great too. Great variety of snippets heard included Here Comes the Sun, Rock and Roll (I think one line at least), Fool to Cry, Stand By Me, 40. I think they broke the curfew of 10.30pm. From Bono we learned that Joe O’Herlihy buried one of The Edge’s plectrums in the stadium when it was being build hence ‘Edge is all around you, always be with you !’ The light show worked particularly well with the darker evenings and at one point the flood lights were reflecting off the clouds. Glasgow, Sheffield, Cardiff and USA coming your way soon, the greatest show on earth.
