Review

2004-10-10 - Self Aid submitted by Peter Jordan

U2 as one of the headlining acts of a who was who of 1980's Irish rock including Van the Man, Boomtown Rats, Rory Gallagher and Elvis Costello played a blistering set which overran as the finale of the day long concert planned as a Live Aid type spectacular to raise money and awarness to create Irish jobs in the middle of an econominc depression and high unemployment and emigration.

Hence the choice of songs such as Dylan's Maggies Farm the concert also became something of a memorial to Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy who had died of a drug overdose the previous January (Hence Bono's utterance in the set of "Hello to you Phil Lynott")

After running well over the permitted 15 minutes Bono comes back on stage saying "The man back there says we can do one more" and blasts out an anthemic version of Bad.

An excellent climax to a wonderful days concert with the cream of Irish talent of the time which finally ended with Bono joining the throngs on stage for a finale renendition of a song "Lets make it work" especially written for the day by the legendary Christy Moore and a young Dublin songwrite Paul Doran
