Review

2001-03-28 - Review submitted by Rob Zepp

Whoa!
Great to see the band on tour after 4 years. They were awesome right from the start. Rather surprisingly, they kicked off the show with the house lights still up! Fortunately, I had my MD recorder rolling so I didn't miss a note of Elevation - the first song which really rocked. Then, they went into a great rendition of Beautiful Day... with everyone in the place on their feet... dancing and partying.

The stage was relatively simple (in comparison to the PopMart spectacle). In keeping with their intention of getting closer to their fans, the stage is attached to 2 catwalks that go out into the audience... meeting in a point at what would be center court for a sporting event in the arena. The entire setup looks like a big heart. Bono and The Edge constantly go up and down the catwalks ... out into the audience... leaning close to the fans. Wellllll... a BIG surprise and quite a SCARY moment came early in show during The End of the World. Bono was backing up along the runway, facing the Edge who was walking toward him. As he approached the point of the heart-shaped runway, his right foot went off the edge and he went tumbling down backwards into the crowd. Everyone in the theater gasped. I was thinking "Oh my gosh, if he's hurt this really IS the end of the world!" Fortunately, security guards were there to catch him and break his fall before he reached the ground. Moments later, they helped him back onto the runway, where he sung the next few notes of the song while laying down. Quite a scene. In fact, the entire sequence was caught on video and has been posted in RealVideo at:

Bono's fall. Aaaaaaaahh!!!

Anyway, my wife and I will be catching the boys again Monday night 3/26/01 in Ft. Lauderdale and on Friday night 3/30/01 in Atlanta. I'll be recording those shows as well and will ultimately burn all 3 to CD-R. If you're interested in trading, drop me a line at my e-mail address below. I'm psyched to see them 3 out of their first 4 shows. Tell you what, DON'T MISS THIS SHOW! It rocks.
