I was part of the ents team at the time, here's the story
U2 were booked to play in our "Disco area" with the Radio 1 roadshow. The idea was that the show was broadcast live for an hour and a half then the band would have played and the first half hour of their set was to be broadcast live.
Unfortunately a week before the show we got a call to say they wouldn't be back from America and they were pulling out.
Most of the tickets had been sold and we had no band. We were offered various artists including John Martyn! but eventually we got the Polecats instead.
We had to have new posters printed but the billing went from U2 plus Radio 1 Roadshow to Radio 1 Roadshow plus the Polecats.
There was musch disappointment as you can imagine!
We did however get U2 on thier next tour and they did a fantastic show.
I've still got the contract somehwere!!
