Review
2006-12-01 - A good evening but lay off the preachine submitted by DavidI agree with much of the last review. I thought the gig was great fun; the stage is excellent with a good playlist of old and new stuff. Good thumping bass drum and bass but the ballads were treated well too. They have made a good effort to Japanify the show with quite a bit of banter in Japanese, Kanji characters and Japanese flags. Impressive for a world tour which is only in the country for 3 days. Bit disappointed there was no support act - is this usual in Japan?
Last time I saw U2 was 93 on the zooropa tour and they have defo aged since then. The Edge probably wears it best as he always looked older than the other fellas. Clayton needs a makeover though, looks a bit like someones dad who is both suprised and pleased to have been invited along. This is no reflection on the music which was excellent quality throughout and very tight - to counter my image comment above I would single out Clayton as doing an excellent job on bass. I agree with the previous post about the constant preaching from Bono. It is good that the band write intelligent songs and use their position to highlight issues to the world. However, by picking so many (Aids, middle-east, iraq, poverty in africa, human rights amnesty...) they dilute the impact. Bono suing that lady to get his hat back doesn't help his position on over consumption of material posessions either.
Highlights for me were City of Blinding lights and Sometimes, you can't make it on your own. They must be sick of playing these but they made them sound fresh as the day they were written. back
