Review

2006-11-12 - this is not goodbye submitted by annieliz

After a terrifying 'vertigo' experience last time we saw U2 (the ZooTV concert, Sydney) in the top rows of the football stadium, we decided to spend the extra to have A reserve seats lower in the Olympic stadium this time. (That said, we LOVED ZooTV as a show in itself).

Surprised after that investment to still be quite a long way back from the stage but at least we weren't up high - which meant we could DANCE (because we weren't gripping onto the rails) and have fun - and we did!

From where we were, upper part of the bowl area, about 3/4 of the field length back from the stage, the sound was brilliant, much better than ZooTV. The only song when the sound seemed to go strange was "One" - the sound was bouncing around and making Edge sound out of time with Bono.

Atmosphere was faultless. The rain actually made it even better, it started just as U2 came out and because it was so intense, it created an amazing party mood, everyone up jumping, going crazy. The people around us only sat down once the whole show during Yahweh and I think that's because we all just dropped by then after using up so much energy. Then we were all up again dancing, singing full-voiced for the rest of the show.

Lots of love in the stadium, everyone around us smiling, singing. Brilliant brilliant concert. The sound during New Year's Day was spectacular. All the audience singing throughout added to the magic and at times Bono took a moment out just to listen. Was thrilled U2 did Sunday Bloody Sunday, don't think I've ever heard it live and the crowd answering Bono back and forth was amazing.

In quieter moments, when Bono sang the Pavarotti part of Miss Sarajevo it sounded so natural, so beautiful - I preferred it to the original. During that moment and the Kite flying moments the audience was spellbound. The kite was so lyrical floating away from Bono's fingertips.

Very interesting to see the evolution of the presentation of Bullet the Blue Sky from ZooTV days to now, great to see the band always updating. Moved to tears seeing the bison on the screens in "One" but that always gets me...

Though most of the time the band was tiny in the distance, we had the positive of being able to fully appreciate the amazing visula show and I can't give it high enough praise, like nothing I've ever seen.

The "dreamtime" visuals were particularly beautiful. The beginning visuals to Vertigo and Elevation, etc had to be seen to be believed. Sound for all the big stadium style songs was perfect. Energy was UP and combined with a very humid Sydney night it made for a charged and unique atmosphere.

LOVED this concert, LOVE U2 and as always, can't wait for them to return to see them again... thanks Bono for singing "this is not goodbye" as the final words - we'll count the days to see U2 in concert again.
