2006-11-11 - A night to remember submitted by TroyWell it started at 8am when i arrived at the telstra stadium hoping to be one of the first few to arrive, but to my amazement there were already 300 people or so before me there lined up, some had been there for 2 nights, and there was also another line of people on the opposite side of the stadium queued up waiting to get in, i was like oh fuck how am i going to get into the elipse with so many people here already, as since there were so many people for the outdoor shows they didnt do the lottery ticket here where they scan you ticvket to see if you get into the inner circle at front of stage, it was first in first serve. So iwas in a panic but there was room in the elipse for 1500 people i was told so that made me feel a little easier.
The day dragged on so slowly with bing in a cramped line all day not helping my patience as we were like cattle being pushed together, by 2pm they started to stand and move up closer to the gates, which was still over 3 hours from opening up, madness i tell you lol.
As the time drew close for the gates to be opened i got a text from my good friend Simone telling me her father who had been suffering really badly of late had just passed away so my heart went out for her and i was thinking of her and her family.
Not long after i got her text the gates opened and the push and shove began as everyone who was there wanted to be in the elipse, ever so slowly we were getting let in then most ran to get into position even thou we were told not to run, to my amazement when i got into the stadium i made may in to the elipse and was like 6th row deep, so i was very excited and relieved and just as kanye west started some people were still seated so i ended up making it to second row and didnt move from there for the rest of the night, i was in total disbelief that after all my worry and so many people ahead of me i had made it to 2nd row at a U2 show in front of 70,000 people. what an awesome feeling.
It had been a sunny warm day all long and towards the end some cloud cover began to emerge but it didnt look bad enough to rain, but wouldn't you know it just as soon a s the song to bring the band on stage starts so did the rain, but no one cared it only enhanced the moment, it really bucketed down but U2 werent phased, they came on and belted out city of blinding lights and the crowd was wild, the rain did nothing to dampen our spirits as we had waited 8 years for this day not to mention the longest day of lining up in a packed queue, but ji'd made 2 new friends along the way, Paco and Myrna from Spain who had been to 23 shows on the tour and it was an awesome time spending the day and show with them,
the next number was vertigo and man it was pissing down by now but it didnt stop the edge from jumping up and down right in front of us, u could see the puddles under his feet and the lights from the stage glowing under his shoes in the rain, was an awesome thing to see, bono was like yay we come to oz and we end the drought haha then bono rips into a little bit of i cant stand the rain against my window bringing back sweet memories haha
then the next song was a very funky version of eleveation that had an awesome intro and groove to it and bono surprised us all by giving is a bit of kylie minogues, cant get you out of my head haha was very cool, not to mention a snippet of highway to hell by AC/DC, the next few songs were until the end of the world, new years day and i was amazed at how flawless the band soudned, pouring rain and all there were no stuff ups then the rain finally stopped and beautiful day came on and bono half way thru sings here comes the sun, he just has a knack for picking the right songs for the moment, truly amazing, then yahweh from the new album was played and then walk on, this is when the night changed for me emotiaonally as walk on as always reminded me of hutchs passing and its a song that lifts me up to remember the good and sacred things not the bad then the lyrics just hit me and i broke down into tears thinking of my mate kieran who passed away just one week ago on the night of my show so it was my goodbye to him, i even have tears just writing this now as it was such a moving song and moment and a fitting tribute to my mate kieran so its brought back strong memories of last night, i love u mate and i miss u.....
So then the next song was sometimes you cant make it on your own, a song bono made for his father, so i automatically thought of simone and how she was doing and once i again i broke down and cried my tears for my good friend simone who must of being doing it tough while i was having one of the nights of my life. After i write this ill load these 2 songs onto my music player and hopefully you can share some of what i was feeling, it was a very intense few songs for me that i needed to have to let go of the hurt and pain i was feeling for my mate kieran and my pain i was feeling for simone, bono even did a snippet of a song i dont know called the black hills of dakota during in it.
Then one of my fav songs off their new album came on, love and peace or else and its such an amazing song the way they do it, larry has a single drum kit at the end of the elipse and just pounds the crap out of it, i got some awesome pics of him on the big screen doing this, then bono also has a go at it, so cool to see, they really know how to put on a great show without trying too hard. Then one of the crowd favs was next, sunday bloody sunday and half way thru it the 70,000 strong crowd chants with bono NO MORE, NO MORE, NO MORE....... And strangley enough he rocks into a lil bit of rock the casbah with the shareef dont like it, rockin the cashbah rock the casbah, i love how bono just inserts such classics into the song that if u werent a fan u would think they were meant to be there.
Then the next few songs were awesome versions of bullet the blue sky, with snippets of johnny comes marching home, hoorah hoorah, and the hands that built america, then one of the songs of the night was next, miss sarevjo with bono singing the opera part of pavarotti and my god was it awesome, i can see he got his voice from his father who was an opera singer, the show just kept going from strength to strength with pride in the name of love next, then the wholse elipse jumping in tandem to where the streests have no name, it was an awesome site to see and be a part of then they did one and went of stage..
For the encore they came back with some old classics, zoo station which featured a pic of our prime minister on screen and then one of petter garrett who would make a much better choice, so the crowd all cheered at that lol as lil johnny howard is a puppet to george bush and i think we know how bono feels about the usa and geaorge bush on the topic of iraq as we have troops there too so bono wished them a safe return.
The fly was next and when with or without you came on bono picked out a girl who was only like 2 people across from me to go on stage to her amazement and it was a very touching moment for her and for even the people around her, especially when bono started singing and they could never tear us apart by inxs, i immediately broke down into tears again this time for hutch, miss u mate! then they did a lil bit of love, love will tear us apart.....then before i could feel sad any longer the saints are coming was played and man that is one awesome live song to jump and punch your fist to, it flew by too quickly, then one of my all time favourites angel of harlem was played then the final song was kite, with an aboriginal didjeridu player to enhance the song even more, half way thru the song bono started to fly a kite which was a beautiful moment as it sailed out of the stadium i realised my night was over but what a night it was.... i hope i dont have to wait 8 years for another one like it.
As i was leaving the venue i was walkign past the VIP tent and saw inxs' former singer jon stevens who i had seen many times in concert and i said hello to him and got his pic, was a very cool moment.
