Review

2001-12-01 - I Sang, I Danced, I Cried - St. Louis Concert submitted by Beachbum

U2's St. Louis show was warm, honest and heart-felt. For a band of their stature, U2 never loses touch with their audience. They not only play to the audience, they play WITH them. Have you ever attended a concert where the performers allowed 2 unemployed musicians a "once in a life-time opportunity" to join them on stage? Then after the song (Knockin on Heaven's Door) was over, and hugs between band members and fans complete, Bono teased with the comment "Okay, we've got a show to do, now fuck off!"

Filled with energy and generating a positive mania to everyone in attendance, I personally will be "pumped" for weeks to come from this extraordinary experience. U2 carefully designed their show to comfort and strengthen their American fans at a time when we need it most. Particularly genuine was Bono's comments regarding “religious fanatics who have recreated God in their own image -- tiny, insignificant and pathetic.”

The setlist was a perfect commingling of the best of U2's past (New Year’s Day, I Will Follow, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Where the Streets Have No Name, Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, Bullet the Blue Sky, and One) -- with coverage from "All That You Can't Leave Behind" (Elevation, Beautiful Day, Stuck in a Moment, Kite, New York and Walk On) which is their best music since "Joshua Tree", which is undeniably one of the best albums of all time!

Dedicating music to important personal events to U2 -- Ireland's troubled past and the suicide of Michael Hutchence and significant social issues - Martin Luther King and his fight for civil rights (Pride, In the Name of Love), and Sept. 11th, U2 is returning to a time when social conscience was a vital part of music.

I sang, I danced, I shouted and I cried. I love you guys oh so very much!!!

Thank you Bono, Edge, Adam and Larry.
