Review

2001-11-21 - I must speak my mind submitted by Doug

Let me set the record straight. My first show was in 1985 (Unforgetable Fire), then 1986 (Amnesty); 1987 (Joshua Tree); 1992(?) (Zoo TV). I'm a long time fan and what U2 does live is far and away better than most (except Springsteen, even Larry Mullen would agree to that.) My expectations of U2 are quite high.

However, I was very disappointed in last night's show. Granted, I don't expect a 'Greatest Hits" tour, but I just don't "get" the song selection on this tour. Correct me if I'm wrong, but 1 song from Boy, 0 (nothing) from October (why was there a piano on stage?), 1 song from War; Acoustic set (too long) Pride & Bad were nice (UF), Streets was good (JT), but Bullet and Still Haven't are a little tired, but good. Mysterious Ways (AB) was good, Until the End of the World was good, One was touching . . . .

My point, there just didn't appear to be any sense of urgency or passion about what they do anymore. The show clocked in just under 2 hrs; 18 songs, $88 to 150 per ticket. I think for that kind of money the people deserve a little more. I did enjoy the staging and lights, but I'd give that stuff up for a more broad set list and a balanced retrospective of songs. Look at your CDs and gaze at the songs in their catalog . . . last night, closing night in LA, that was the best they could do??
