2005-12-11 - Great Concert submitted by Kelly CroyHow was the show? Cleveland's Quicken arena, formally the Gund, now "The Q", provided a wonderful venue for this amazing concert. U2's use of a circular stage, lighting effects, and the band's genuine rapport with the audience gave everyone, regardless of where they sat, a wonderful vantage point and a great show.
How did they sound? U2 sounded great! The band is always great live and this was no exception. I am a long-time fan, but even someone less familiar with the band would have appreciated their clean, album-quality sound, and their traditional, yet unique riffs and adventures within the middle of songs. The band sounded like they should sound. The songs were recognizable.
The show started around around 8:35 PM and ended around 11:30. I got a little nervous at 10:30 when they started saying their good-byes, but they came back out and played for another hour. (They left a couple of times, but we all knew they were coming back.
The concert began with CITY OF BLINDING LIGHTS, and closed with FORTY. I was surprised hearing SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY, but to quote Bono, "America, this is your song now." And you know, he's right. It was great.
U2 wove many Beatles lyrics into their beat-rhythms, and Bono mentioned Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame several times. Bono donned a uniform similar to Sgt. Pepper Lonely Heart's Club Band near the end of the show.
Again, this is/was great show! U2 is back and back not only with a great album, but back with a great tour as well.
My name is Kelly Croy, and I have been a U2 fan since 1980. This visually stunning, theatrically intriguing, politcal driven, and harmonic masterpiece just made me feel 15 years younger.
Great show!
