Review

2005-12-08 - Moving Performance submitted by Ron

Fantastic show! Sound was so crisp and clear - Edge's licks reached into the soul. How does Bono do what he does night after night? Some cool notes about this show: Was that Larry singing a bit with Bono at the end of "Love and Peace or Else"? Sunday Bloody Sunday - Bono brought a young boy up on stage to sit with him and Bono would sing "No More" and the little boy would sing back "No More"...until they were shouting. Bono spoke of how we are all sons of Abraham - Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc. We are all brothers. We should act as brothers. As he helped the boy off stage Bono asked his name and the response was "Jacob"! Bono hinted at our men and women in the military with "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again - and then thanked our military to a huge cheer. Everyone was simply amazed at Bono's voice in Miss Sarajevo - his Italian was fantastic! Something was up - Bono said, for no particular reason, "You two work it out" and he was glancing at Adam and Edge. We wondered if there was a problem. 40 was amazing. We quickly noticed that Edge was over at Adam's spot playing Bass and Adam was at Edge's spot wailing on the guitar, whammy bar swinging. Was this the "work out"? The sounds Edge plucked from that Bass - simply amazing. It went on and on, the whole house singing... Bono was first to leave and the singing got louder. After a good long while, Adam put down the guitar, waved, and went off, but Edge kept working the Bass and Larry beat the drums. After another long while, Edge exited to a huge cheer. The audience chanted as Larry just watched for a while. Then he broke into a huge drum solo to our signing. With a crash of the cymbals, he finished and we roared. We all looked around and wondered - is this how every show has ended or did we just thoroughly enjoy a unique "presto-chango" of roles?

About 20 years ago I took my then girlfriend (now wife) to see U2 at the Civic Center and that show ended with 40. What a treat to return to the venue and enjoy such a great show. My kids are 14.5 and 16.5 and have grown up as huge U2 fans - they enjoyed the show tremendously. The crowd was so diverse - children right up to retirees and almost everyone was on their feet the whole time singing and swaying. Tomorrow will be a day full of nods and waves - I don't think my voice will be back for a while.
