2005-11-26 - U2 Brings Ottawa to their Knees submitted by Sacha Gera

U2 returned to Ottawa after 20 years and brought this relatively quiet, upscale town, to their knees begging for more. Quite literally it was the biggest show to come the city in history (although the Rolling Stones did come this summer...but it didn't compare).

Bono put extra emphasis on the his debt cancellation and make poverty history campaign during the concert, yesterday, as expected, especially considering that it was our country's prime minister who lured him to bring the tour here. He spent much of the day with the prime minister (as usual) campaigning for whats right.

The set list was as perfect as it could have been. There was more emphasis on the older songs, which probably suited the crowd a bit more although most of the people knew the words to the newer song. Of course everyone went nuts for Vertigo!

The band was vibrant, energetic, and playful for with the crowd. In my opinion, it was difficult to hear the band for at least 20% of the concert because the crowd was singing so loud....it was amazing!

Yesterday was really a dream for me. My wife, brother, sister-in-law and I got to meet him as he pulled up to the stadium. He signed autographs and allowed pictures. We were shocked at how nice Bono was and how tolerant he was of the pushy crowd. He just earned even more respect from all of us for the way he handled everything. I was star-struck and could barely move. I think I was even a bit hysterical afterwards because I couldn't acknowledge that I had met my idol.

At the concert, we were in GA. We didn't get in the eclipse but we were at the next best place: centre, first row on the outside of it. He spent a lot of time at the front of the eclipse and were treated with many very close views. My wife and sister-in-law tried to get him to let them up on stage to danse...but it didn't happen.

It was a story-book day. I met my idol, they gave the performance of a life time, and struck an emotional cord with all of us.
