2018-03-24 - i bunked in submitted by emlyn

i was a 13 year old lad living in ballyfermot. and my memories of this day are fading. the weather was great, too good for sitting in the house, and anyway i was bored. so it must have been about 12 noon and i walked out on my own. no goodbye to my ma or da. no telling anyone where i was going. different times. i strolled down to the park, everyone went there on sunny days. walked through the turnstiles up the lane in chapelizod and into the park. but today was different. music in the distance. i follow that sound and i end up at the fence of the racecourse in ashtown. suddenly these older lads start kicking the fence in and ran in. no idea what was going down so i just followed them in. no food. no money. no water! wearing a tee shirt. great. squeezed through the crowd right up close to the front. loved big country, saw annie arguing with the punks, i remember a cool guy in a white t shirt playing guitar for them. simple minds were great but i cant really remember anything of it now. some older lad started asking if anyone wanted his packet of custard cream biccies that he didnt want. i was grateful he turned to me and saw i needed them. thanks mate, i was starving. u2 came on and it was brilliant. again i cant remember much, except his climbing antics and the flag. but still i came here to write this review of the day, the happiness of everyone walking out and singing 40. a perfect summers day and evening fading into the night and walking home across the phoeno, back up that poxy hill to ballyer. in through the door and straight to bed with the day still racing through my mind. i wasnt missed. i survived and made it home myself haha. kids had freedom back then.
