Review

2005-11-22 - Good, not great submitted by Esseedub

This is the sixth time I've seen U2 live, dating back to the Amnesty International show at The Omni in 1986 when I was in my early teens. Including that show, every time I've seen them - Zoo TV, PopMart, Elevation – their live performances have always blown my mind. This show however was the first time that did not occur. Although the show was good, it seemed to me to be more of a greatest hits presentation vs. a showcase of their latest album (I think they only played four songs off of ‘Atomic Bomb’). In fact, it seemed like a watered down version of Elevation, right down to the stage setup, although the lightshow was spectacular. Also, how many times is Bono going to dedicate songs to Michael Hutchence? I realize that the anniversary of his death is around this time of year, but the man died eight years ago. Time to move on.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d have to give this show a 6. I saw the Foo Fighters, Weezer, and Depeche Mode earlier this year and, quite frankly, those concerts smoked this one. Again, I had a great time and enjoyed the night, but there was absolutely nothing mind-blowing about U2 this go-around. Maybe they were tired.
