2017-08-06 - U2 or Styx on the same night, we made the right choice! submitted by Mika Mitchell

I was 16 years old and my best friend and I worked in a donut shop in the San Fernando Valley. A guy named Mark worked at the gas station across the street and would drive us in his VW Squareback to see shows like Motley Crue and Y&T at the Starwood in Hollywood.
One day my best friend came to my house and told me Mark had 3 tickets to a show at the Wolf & Rissmiller's Country Club in Reseda to see a band called U2.
We had no idea who they were and it was a school night, but it sounded like fun, so we snuck out and went to the show.
I'll never forget Bono storming out on the stage in his new-romantic white long sleeve shirt with billowy sleeves and his long curly hair on top and short on the sides. They sang I Will Follow with such force, and Bono climbed up the curtain and jumped back on stage. We fell in love with him and even more so with Larry the drummer, who we thought was so cute. The energy of the band had such a sound that we had never heard before. They played I Will Follow Again for the encore and we were completely star struck.
After the show we both bought long sleeve U2 shirts and wore them to school the next day. All of our friends were wearing Styx shirts and making fun of us for wearing shirts of a band they had never heard of. We told them they were all fools and that this band would some day be huge.
Little did we know how right we would be....
A few weeks later we saw them again at the Hollywood Palladium and managed to get back stage and meet them. We were sitting on a stairway with Bono and he was asking us to call the (then) rock station KMET and request their songs because KMET considered their music to be 'punk rock' and wouldn't play them. Ah, good times. I saw them every time they were in town after that and love to tell this story.
