Review
2005-11-20 - Mix of good and Bad submitted by AtlantaMoiLong time U2 fan seeing them for the first time since 1992. Bought some cheap tix behind the stage and there is no doubt in my mind that was a great way to see the concert considering those seats were three times less than the most expensive seats. Would do that again in a heartbeat (fairly close to the stage even in the upper deck).
I'm not going to candycoat my disdain for U2's most recent recordings. I have loved every U2 album up to and including "Pop". "Pop" is vastly underrated, especially compared to ATYCLB and Atomic. I think if you took the best songs from these two recent albums you'd have a good U2 recording, but as it stands these discs have more filler than U2 has ever had (and it saddens me). So, there is no surprise to me that I'd HATE having them perform "Original of the Species". It's the worst song I've ever heard U2 record and I can't grasp why they think they are on top of their game these days. Perplexing. And hearing a song like that contrasted with "Where The Streets Have No Name" it's even more shocking how awful a song like that is. Of course, you can disagree with me! And I'm sure most of you will... but that's okay. I'm not going to apologize and think I have a right since I've followed them for 24 years. By the way, "Stuck In A Moment" is maybe my 2nd least favorite song U2 has ever done and I got to hear that one as well (yeah for me! lol ). But they did follow that up with "Bad" and made my night.
Light, sound and energy was top notch. Bono's voice sounded a little shot at times, but he sounds that way on the last two records, so no shock there. But then he comes out and sings the Pavarotti part on "Miss Sarajevo" and NAILS it. His voice sounded amazing during that tune.
I mainly went to this show so my wife could see them for the first time. She loved it. That was what was important to me, so the whole night was a positive experience and worth checking out. Even with the silly Abraham comments Bono made. I swear, I know this review sounds negative, but it's not. I had a really great time... but there are just times even one of my all-time fave bands can make me cringe.
Regardless, they are still one of the greatest rock bands of all time and probably can only compete with the Rolling Stones for greatest continuing live act.
Glad I got to see 'em after all these years.
