Review

2005-10-11 - Amazing show... was Bono sick? submitted by Michael

My fiance and I caught the tour in Phoenix in the spring, and I must say, U2 really kicks it up a notch when they play the Garden.

For both the Phoenix show and a show at the Garden for the Elevation tour, we were inside the heart, up against the stage- which was obviously amazing. Last night, we were in the GAs, non-heart and about 7 people deep. But I have to say, last night's show topped both of those others for me.

Part of it was getting to hear Bad live for the first time, but it also felt a little less polished, which I actually liked. The Phoenix show started to feel a little too scripted, in stage movement and actual spoken words. But last night had Bono miss the lead-in to Miss Sarajevo, and had Bono's voice actually cracking mid-song (can't remember which), to the point where he had to break away from the mic mid-lyric and get some water while the band played on. I guess that doesn't sound like the best thing to happen- but it was real, and it made the rest of his performance seem somewhat... I don't know... admirable and human? I guess their shows were starting to seem a little too perfect to me, and it was refreshing to be reminded that Bono is human after all (albeit, he does a bit more with his humanity than the rest of us!).

That said- I am guessing that Bono was sick last night. The voice cracking, but also the fact that they spent VERY little time on the ramp compared to the show in the Spring. Did anybody else notice that?
