Many fans have been shocked to see U2 frontman Bono stagediving during the current round of concerts in support of All That You Can't Leave Behind. It's certainly uncommon to see the leader of one of the world's biggest bands jump into the audience during a show, or for security to allow it to happen, but Bono feels it's necessary to get the full meaning of the Achtung Baby song "The Fly" across.
"It is just one of those annoying things that a singer will ask of security, but for me to be able to perform like I perform I have to be able to step into the songs, you know," Bono told CNN, "and I try to do what they tell me and the character in that particular song is a little out of control and I think the last verse is, 'Look, I got to go. There are things there that, if I could, I would like to rearrange,' and then he just sort of jumps off into the crowd. But, you know, I've escaped with limbs and minor injuries and so have (the audience), so we are OK."
U2 begins a three-night stand at Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, California, tonight (April 23).
